Mudsock Youth Baseball League

News Detail

Jan, 2021

Welcome to Mudsock Youth Baseball!

Here are some commonly asked questions about the 2021 season that parents will find helpful.  If you have additional questions, feel free to reach out to your league commissioner, which can be found on the website dropdown tab under “Rec Baseball.”

Thank you for being part of our league. It’s going to be a great season!

Which league will my child play in?
Players are slotted into grade-based leagues in accordance to their current grade level. Pre-K is for children who will start kindergarten in the upcoming fall.

When will I find out what team my son is on?
Families should expect to hear from their player's coach by the week of March 29th, prior to spring break.

How are teams selected?
For Pre-K and K, teams are assigned by the commissioner. For all other leagues, players are evaluated during January and February and are entered into a league’s draft. Each head coach then selects his or her team based on personal history and evaluation results.

What bat size is right for my son?
We recommend taking a look at the Bat Buying guide on Dick’s Sporting Goods website. Your coach can also answer general questions. You may also contact the league commissioner for your age group. All commissioner emails are posted on our website.

When do practices start?
Preseason practices are scheduled by the league and assigned to teams based on field availability. Weather permitting, each team will get four (4) preseason practices before Opening Day starting in late March or early April. K and Pre-K teams typically have an extra week of practice before games begin. Your coach will let you know when your team practices are scheduled.

What uniform/equipment do I need to buy?
The league provides each player with a shirt, hat and socks. Coaches also receive an equipment bag with balls, helmets, and bats along with tees and catcher’s equipment (where applicable). Families must provide baseball pants and a glove. Families can also provide their own bats, helmets and catcher’s equipment if they choose to do so. Your coach will let you know what color the team has chosen - typically either gray or white.

When is Opening Day?
Opening Day for 2021 is Saturday, April 24th.

What is Opening Day?
Opening Day is typically a day-long celebration of the start of the baseball season at Billericay Park. Players and coaches assemble for a parade, team pictures and a festival featuring local sponsors and businesses. K and Pre-K players run the bases while other age divisions play their first games. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our Opening Day activities will be very limited in 2021.

When do games start and how many per week?
Beginning on Opening Day, teams typically play two games per week unless there are rescheduled rainouts. Most – if not all – teams play on Saturdays with another game midweek.

How many practices are there each week?
Once the season begins, each head coach sets his or her own practice schedule. For younger ages, there typically is not more than one practice per week. For K and Pre-K, some coaches will arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to each game to hold a quick practice before the game begins.

When does the season end?
Weather permitting, all leagues are targeted to end before the July 4 holiday with any postseason tournaments and all-star games wrapping up that week.

Where can I find the rules?
